This week has been one of those weeks for me.. i've stuck to my diet.. but i've had no physical activity.. the weather has kept rosalie and i in the house, plus it made me just want to lounge. I figured I gained this week just for that fact... butttt.. i stayed the same. No gain no loss. I'm not disquisted... I'd rather stay the same than gain!
As I said before, my mom arrives in Italia in less than a month. I'm so excited I could explode.. not only because I miss her.. but I know it's killing her to see Roey (she's changed so much since we saw my family 3 months ago).. and I know how excited she is to see Italy.. it's always been a dream of hers. We finally have our agenda laid out.. it took a crap ton of work, researching, and flipping back and forth between train schedules.. but I have it figured out.. so I'll share :)
Tues 17 Mom leaves from PA
Weds 18 She arrives in Italy

Thurs 26 She heads back home
I know it's a little over a week.. but the time will fly by sooo fast :(
So it seems as though time is just dragging til she gets here.. so I've been trying to keep busy. Friday, housing came to fix our bathroom cabinet.. it's been broke since we've moved in, but it's the bathroom that we don't use so we've been putting it off. After housing left, Rosalie and I picked Kevin up from work then went and got groceries. I hate getting groceries. The commissary is always a zoo.
Saturday morning Kevin needed a haircut.. so we all headed to base... then we came home and I cleaned my house.. and by cleaned.. I mean I vacuumed downstairs and dusted and wiped the kitchen down.. Just a quicky. Then our friends Meghan and Derek came over.. the boys had a good time playing wii.. they are so competitive it's sickening. I made awesome strombolis.. as always :) hahah... Roey had a WEIRD night. First she passed out in her high chair while I cooked dinner. It was a weird time for her to sleep. She woke up crying and crying.. she was miserable. She then had an explosive poop.. which told me her teeth musta been bothering her.. After that she was fine.. then her and I walked out to the kitchen and she just started puking everywhere. Ugh it was terrible. Then she was fine.. she sputtered around the livingroom and played with Audrey. She finally went to sleep at like 9.. but she was up most of the night.. she just kept waking up crying for Mom.
Sunday, I was exhausted. Thankfully, when Roey got up for the day, Kevin got up with her... and I got a few hours of sleep. It felt amazing. We spent Sunday doing odds and ends that we've been putting off.. I made a new arrangement to be hung upstairs and Kevin got it hung up... I just have to order pictures for the frames. Kevin got the grass cut while I cleaned up the kitchen. I then painted over any little marks on our walls. I know what you're thinking, painting over marks? Our paint here is weird. The walls mark up sooo easy, but if you try to wipe it off the paint comes off too. I got the entire downstairs done... then I touched up any scratches and dings in the molding,, which looked like total crap when we moved in. The corners were completely chipped up.. but some Old English Scratch Remover made them less noticeable. Our molding def looks 100 times better. We were planning on going to the Papa Roach USO Show on base that evening.. we figured it would be outside so Kevin brought his muffs home for Roey.. Well we got the base, it was raining, they had it inside, so we said screw it and left. We went to the BX.. Kevin got some new Under Armour.. Roey got some new toys.. and we went home. We spent the evening all 3 of us playing.. so much better than a concert :)
Today I've gotten a good bit accomplished.. but not as much as I wanted. My downstairs is clean (although with all the toys scattered you'd never know).. I have a mountain of laundry and I've conquered a good bit of it.. I got my ironing done.. dumped some weed killer outside (i couldn't get my sprayer to work and got frustrated so I just started dumping the solution everywhere)... I swept the back sidewalk... I need to clean upstairs, but can't bring myself to do it. Housing is coming tomorrow and I don't want to waste my time and scrub my floors and housing just track all through the house. Especially since I hand scrub my floors, I would just get mad by the time they left. I hate when people wear shoes in the house.. it's not how I was brought up.. shoes are for OUTSIDE.
I need to at least weed out some of Roey's clothes.. I have such a hard time taking stuff she's outgrown and putting it in the bins I have.. I just hate to face the fact that she's getting bigger.
Since I've rambled entirely too much.. yet again.. here's a few pics :)
It's been a pretty eventful week for us at the Hollis house and it's only Wednesday. Roey has 2 new teeth.. we let her feed herself the other night with a spoon and it was successful! As soon as I gave her the spoon she scooped up mashed potatoes and began chowing away. Granted, she wore a lot of the potatoes, but a lot also made it to her mouth! She is so smart it's crazy.
Even though those 2 teeth came through.. we still aren't getting a break at night. Rosalie just wants to eat and eat and eat. Let's do a run through of our day.. Rosalie gets up and has a heaping bowl of cereal. After breakfast, she gets a bath and gets dressed for the day. After her bath she eats at least 4 oz and takes a nap. A bottle follows her nap.. then an hour later lunch. She usually has a mid afternoon snack and by snack I mean a whole thing of baby food. In between lunch and snack time, she usually has a bottle or two. After her snack, she sometimes has another bottle... supper soon follows. After supper.. Rosalie baths (i know again.. but she loves her tubbies so she gets 2 a day).. and she'll either play for a bit, or go straight for 6 oz of baba and crash. Every 3 hours she is getting up and eating 4-6 oz. Every time. I can't seem to get her full. This is one major growth spurt we are going through right now. She was eating at least 9 bottles during the day.. I know, like 45+ oz of formula! We started trying to substitute it because seriously, who can afford that! lol We started giving her even more solids.. it just blows me away how much she is eating right now.. coming from the little girl that had to go see the pediatrician because she was refusing to eat anything! I stop and think about how much of a fight it was to get her to eat.. she'd scream the whole time in her high chair.. then all of the sudden it's like we can't give her enough! She even gets snacks all through out the day.. gerber cheezies, biter cookies, yogurt melts, and puffs. I can't wait til she turns 9 months to weigh her and see how much she gained this month. She was averaging about a pound to a pound and a half a month... I bet she goes way over that! The outfit that she is wearing right now is 12-18 months!
On another note, our baby gate finally came! We've had a lot of mail problems lately and luckily the gate wasn't one of them.. it came within a few days! It's installed and is soo nice! It's metal and has a spring loaded door.. I'm going to eventually order another one for upstairs, but it's not a necessity right now because rosalie doesn't play upstairs..well she does, but she plays in her crib. She loves the baby gate... she constantly stands by it, pulling on the bars and squealing.. all I can think about is Step Brothers "THIS HOUSE IS A PRISON!!" hahahahah. It's a dream baby gate.. I couldn't get any place to ship it... and sure enough Walmart did! ANDDD it was only .97 cent shipping!
I have been on this hair bow craze right now.. it's like an addiction. I can't stop buying them. I have found the CUTESTTTTT little boutique.. Miss Khloe's Bows.. Click on the link to check out her facebook page. Her work is awesome. Rosalie's bow holder is actually stuffed full.. I'm going to have to order another one. I love that her hair is getting long on top that I can actually put it in a bow instead of her wearing headbands (cause frankly she doesn't keep them on!) She has a bow in her hair every single day! :)
Oh and a Mandee note. I've been going stir crazy. As most people know, I'm an obsessive compulsive neat freak. Everything has to be organized and perfect. I can't help it.. it's a problem I have. Once a week I thoroughly clean out our fridge.. throw away anything that's expired, anything that's going to expire before we can use it, and wipe it out. Well, the other day this odor started. It was bad. I assumed first it was from the steaks that I had marinating over night, but I couldn't understand why I would be able to smell it because they were in lock and lock and they seal tight. A day after they steaks were gone, I could still smell it. I then assumed it was the broccoli in the crisper, so I threw it out. The smell stayed. I then threw out a thing of tomatoes and a container of watermelon. I thought for sure the watermelon was the culprit. Hours later, the odor was even stronger. At this point, there was nothing fresh left in our fridge, EXCEPT for an onion that I had cut up in a little lock and lock. (I cut up an onion at the beginning of the week that way all week when I'm cooking I don't have to worry about cutting an onion, I can just take some out of the lock and lock).. apparently the onion went terribly bad. MINUTES after removing it from the fridge, it was odor free. lol. I put a thing of baking soda in the fridge to make it fresh. Boy do I feel relieved.
Last night Kevin said "Roey, let me check your mouth.. I haven't peeked around in awhile"... because she just won't ever let us in there to see if her gums are swollen or white...so Kevin stuck his finger in her mouth and rubbed her gum and low and behold, there was a top tooth in there! It's pretty far down so I'm guess it popped through about a week ago. Roey has a total of 3 teeth now! I'm pretty sure that the other top one will be coming soon. She screamed and screamed and screamed last night until she puked.. after she puked, she screamed and screamed more... it was this ear piercing high pitched screams that I've only ever heard the night before her 2nd bottom tooth popped through. Finally we got her calmed.. lots of walking.. lots of passing her back and forth..Kevin went upstairs and got her blank and I got her a teething ring... she curled up on my lap with her blank and went to town on the teething ring and she calmed.. then she was ready to play! haha! It was like nothing ever happened. Of course she then had a rough night... she slept til 1:30 and after that we were up most the night. I feel like a slug today.. but I really need to clean.
OOHH and I forgot to add.. my mom is officially coming! She got her ticket over the weekend.. she arrives in Italy on the 18th of August and will be here til the 26th. We have such a fun schedule planned. They day she gets here we're going to have a down day and just chill and let her get settled. On Thursday we're going to take her to the local stuff, Polcenigo, Barcis, and going to San Gorgios for supper. Friday we're going to go down to Venice. Saturday we're going to head down to Pisa, stay at Camp Darby for the night, then hit up Florence on our way back home. Monday is going to be a down day... give Roey a day to stay at home.. we'll probably grill and let Roey swim.. Tuesday we're going to Verona and going to the arena, the mafia museum, Juliet's house and tomb.. Kevin and I have been down to Verona but we didn't get to see everything just because Rosalie was sooo tiny that we didn't want to be gone the entire day... Wednesday we're heading to the beach and Thursday she leaves to go home. We are going to be sooo stinken busy!
Well I have a busy day ahead of me.. I'm hoping to squeeze in a nap when roey does... then I'm going to start tearing this house apart and cleaning. With working outside so much lately I've let things pile up.. I've at least got my laundry done and ironed this morning.
Roey still hasn't been sleeping very well.. but we were at least getting her to sleep for like 5 hours at a time... that lasted real long... JOKE. I read about giving her a blanket to sleep with so that way when she wakes up, she doesn't need me... and honestly, it worked. I was so impressed. But, then she hit a growth spurt and was up like every 4 hours anyways to eat. We went straight from that, to her just getting up every 3-4 hours. Seriously, she's 8 months old.. I've been dealing with this for the past 2 months since we got back from the states. She's wearing me down... and I know everyone is probably getting sick of me complaining about it... but she's just breaking me. If you were in my shoes you'd complain too. What happened to my perfect newborn sleeper?
She's also getting sooooooo bad. She has mastered the stairs... and I really mean, mastered. We ordered a baby gate but it's not here yet. It's a pretty sweet gate.. it's from Dream Baby.. it's white and metal and really classy looking.. it has a swing open door. We were going to get one from the italian toy store, but we compared prices and this one was so much cheaper, and walmart even did .97 cent shipping. Awesomeness.
Roey is constantly pulling herself up to everything.. usually everything on my coffee table is on the floor within a matter of minutes of her being out of bed. She's going to be walking soon. She's trying so hard to stand on her own. She's getting so brave it's scary!
She talks like crazy.. everything is DaDa.. Mama when she's mad.. (go figure)
Well that's about all the time I have.. I have weeds to pull outside! TGIF!
Here's a few pics since I haven't posted any lately!
As I sit here, I think it's CRAZY how many places Rosalie has been already.. and she's only 8 months old.. She has done more and seen more than most people do and see in a lifetime.. Let's do a lil recap of every big city, country, and state she's been to.
I'm sure I'm missing some.. but it's going to be fun to keep adding to it! We have a bunch of stuff planned for the rest of summer.. especially since my mom is coming next month.. we're going to hit Pisa and probably Florence.. Hopefully Rome before the summer is over.. and we're thinking about Ljubljana, Slovenia (and Lake Bled) the end of this month! She's quite the world traveller!
I thought this recipe was going to be a total flub... and it ended up being GREAT! Kevin absolutely loved these and they tasted just like McDonalds! (And since the Italian McDonalds is ridiculously expensive, this recipe is a great substitute! It's an under $5 meal!)
1 c water
1 c flour
2 teas salt
1 teas onion powder
1/4 teas pepper
1/8 teas garlic powder
a pinch of paprika (the original recipe called for MSG.. but of course everyone knows MSG isn't good for you and it actually doesn't have flavor it's self, it just enhances the other flavors... when dealing with chicken, paprika will do the same thing.. so I used it instead)
Oil for frying (I use peanut oil)
4 chicken breasts (i used 3 because that's how ours come packaged, and it was plenty for Kevin and I)
Beat egg and combine with water
Combine flour, salt, pepper, onion salt, garlic powder, and paprika in a gallon sized ziplock bag
Pound each chicken breast until 1/4 inch thick
Trim into bite sized pieces
Toss chicken with flour mixture
Remove chicken from flour, dip in the egg mixture and toss with the flour again
Throw entire bag (flour and chicken) in the freezer for at least an hour
Cover the remaining egg mixture and place in fridge
Remove from freezer, dip the chicken in the egg mixture
Toss chicken with flour mixture
Deep fry at 375 (190C for those in Europe!) for 10-12 minutes (or until golden brown)
Remove from deep fryer and drain on a BROWN PAPER BAG (draining on paper towels will cause them to go soggy!)
After sleeping for two hours, (not by choice, i would have went to bed early if I could have!) I awoke to get ready for our trip to Croatia. I woke Kevin up as soon as I got out of the shower and Roey up 15 minutes before we had to leave. I planned on feeding her and changing her diaper and assumed she would go back to sleep. Nope.
We arrived on base and waited for out bus. They told us we had to be there by 4:15am, but our bus ended up running late.. so being there early was pointless.
We departed from Aviano.. and yes, Rosalie was still WIDE awake.. giggling and talking and spitting.
About an hour and a half into our trip, we stopped at an Auto Grill (a rest stop) right before leaving Italy.
We crossed into Slovenia and were only in Slovenia for about 30 minutes before we entered Croatia... Right before we crossed into Slovenia, Roey fell asleep.. she slept the whole way through Slovenia and didn't wake up until we were at customs at Croatia.
We arrived at our first destination, Porec, Croatia. Since our bus was running late, we had to book it to the boat because it was pulling out at 9:30.. just as we all got on the boat, it pulled out.
We made a few stops to pick up some people, then we were off! We cruised down the Adriatic sea along the Istrian Coast.. We went down the Lim Canal where we saw an old pirates cave, which by now has been turned into a tourist attraction. There are a lot of old pirates caves along the Istrian Coast, but that one was the only one visible from the boat. Roey only lasted about 20 minutes on the boat before she zonked.. She didn't wake until we docked.
We docked in Rovinj, Croatia. They split us up into 2 groups.. we were in the first group, so we stayed on the boat for lunch, which everyone in the second group left the boat and was to come back later for lunch. We were seated upstairs where out of like 6 tables of 8 people, there were only 2 other Americans. Mostly everyone was from Germany and Belgium. It was all Germans that sat at our table and luckily the couple across from us spoke English, so we talked to them the whole time. The husband seemed really interested in us Americans and kept asking 100 questions! Our lunch was pretty good.. we had chicken and Croatian sausage.. they also served wine with the meal, but Kevin said it was no bene so i opted out of having some wine.
We finished lunch and left the boat for some sightseeing on our own. The town was gorgeous! Rosalie was so well behaved.. she just cruised around in her stroller and you wouldn't have even known she was there. Kevin and I got a picture done of the 2 of us that is a profile.. it was crazy, this Greek guy did it in probably like 4 minutes... he cut out profile views of kevin and I, and when he was done they were connected.. I'll have to post a pic later.
We boarded back onto the boat. We decided to sit downstairs this time because Kevin and I were miserable burnt and we just wanted to be out of the sun for awhile. Roey was sunscreened of course so it didn't bother her. We sit in this lil private spot on the back of the boat.. it was so nice and relaxing
We arrived in our next lil town where you could shop and swim. When we got off the boat Roey passed out, so Kevin and I walked around the little shops and got some gelato. We spent the rest of our time there hanging out by the sea. It was so nice and relaxing.
We boarded back onto the boat and headed back for Porec. By this point, everyone was so exhausted and ready to go home. We sat in the big section of the boat downstairs and we sat with these 3 sisters.. Rosalie just loved them.
We arrived back in Porec. We shopped around a lil bit.. got Rosalie a fan that has pictures of all the big Croatian cities on it.. it's cute.. and a bib with 2 ladybugs on it and it says Croatia. We always try to get her something from every place we go, but everything in Croatia was kinda junky looking, and the fan was the best we could do!
We ate lunch at a lil (and i mean LITTLE) cafe by the sea... and had a Croatian pizza (a margarita).. it was really good.. Kevin ate over half the pizza by himself!
We then headed back to the bus station where we had to pay to use a bathroom.. which is no shocker over here.. but the bathroom was sooo dingy! While we waiting for the bus, we watched a call girl do her thing and meet up with clients.. it was hilarious. As soon as she walked into the bus station, I jokingly said to Kevin "She's a prostitute".. Turned out I was right. Also while we were waiting, this guy came through digging through the trash.. he pulled out a redbull can, examined it really close, sniffed it a lil, then put it in his bag. It was FOUL.
We boarded the bus.. at this point, we were miserably tired.. sunburnt.. and ready to be home in our bed! Roey fell asleep before we even left Croatia. When we got to customs, they made us all get out of the bus which sucked because roey was asleep and we were finally cooling down on the bus... and it was sooo muggy outside!!! Rosalie slept the rest of the bus ride. We watched the Blindside, which I ended up zonking out before Pordenone and Kevin woke me up to tell me we were almost in Pordenone. Why? I don't know. We also HAD to stop at a rest stop an hour away from home.. for HALF AN HOUR. No one wanted to, but they made us get off the bus.
We arrived back to Aviano.. We could not wait to get home! We had a blast but were sooooo tired! Our ITT escort absolutely loved Rosalie.. when we got off the bus she told us we could just leave her with her! lol!
I didn't post NEARLY all the pics I took... I took 90 pics and I'm not about to sit and upload every single one on here.. especially since I have a house to clean lol... We're finally getting everything back to normal here.. we got back and I had a mountain of laundry to do, which it isn't easy getting caught up on laundry here. Maybe another day I'll post more pics.. but for now, if you don't have facebook, this will have to do! :)
I still can't get over the fact that my lil peanut is already 8 months old.. Time for our monthly recap.
8 MONTHS OLD!
Weight: 21 lbs 8 oz! A TWO pound jump from last month
Height: 29 inches long
Diaper Size: Still a 3
Clothes Size: Almost into 12-18 months. Some 6-12 months are gettin too small but 12s are still a tad bit big.
Words: Dada, Mama, Hey Dad
She is quite the talker and spitter, but those are the only words coming out right now. Mostly everything is "Hey Dad!" I only get Mama when she's crying.
Teeth: Still just two! I don't think she's going to get anymore! lol! She's going to have 2 teeth the rest of her life. Haha ... in all reality, her bottom gums are starting to get a lil white so when one pops through, the rest are quickly to follow!
She's finally eating solid foods again.. but still on sleep strike.
This Saturday she'll visit her 4th country.. Croatia.
She is pulling herself up to everything now and her little legs are strong. She gets the concept to take a step to if she needs to pull herself closer to something. She's going to be walking in no time.. I wish she wouldn't though! lol! She's so curious now just crawling, wait til she starts walking!
We usually spend a couple of days out of the week in her pool... she's such a lil water baby.. she loves being in the pool!
Today I feel like I got hit by a truck full of wet garbage. Rosalie still is on her sleep strike. I don't know how much more I can take.. I've done pretty good so far.. considering for the past month, we sleep at most, 2 hours a night, but last night I cracked. I don't know what was so different about it or if it was just everything catching up with me, but I think I went over the edge.. okay I've complained, now time to move on.
This weekend was INSANE. Friday, I ran errands all afternoon, picked Kevin up from work, and we went for groceries because I didn't want to go to the base on Saturday because I figured it would be a ZOO. Well one of the stops I had to make was the Post Office because Rosalie's 4th of July outfit still hadn't came.. and of course, it wasn't there on Friday... so that meant we'd have to run back to the base on Saturday anyways.
Saturday, we headed to the base to hit the PO again, and SUPRISE, Rosalie's 4th of July outfit still didn't come. Boy was I jacked!!! I paid like $35 for a tutu just for the 4th of July, and it never came. The lady claimed she shipped it like 2 weeks ago.. I'm sure she lied. So Kevin decided to get his hair cut while we were there, then we headed to Area 1, where spontaneously, we bought a patio set. I know, crazy. It's BEAUTIFUL. We ended up hanging around base for a few hours waiting for our friends to come so they could take it to our house for us.
We got home around 4, and I still had to clean my house and make everything for the 4th of July.. but I got it all done by 6:30! After Roey went to bed, Kevin and I watched Dear John. I didn't know what to think of it... I loved the book, but was disquisted by the ending and suprisingly they changed the ending in the movie.. so I don't know. I guess it wasn't as bad as everyone made it out to be!
Sunday, we had a 4th of July party here. Despite the rain, it was a blast! Our friends are pretty much the best... and Roey had fun playing with Audrey too! :) We headed to the base around 9:30 for the fireworks. The fireworks show was really good this year.. they said it was going to be a 25 minute show, but it was def longer than that.. and Rosalie LOVEEEED them! When we left for the base she was down for the night.. as soon as I walked into her room to get her she woke up. (My intentions were to take her in her PJs and just let her sleep).. well she was wide awake, stayed awake the whole way to the base, and stayed up for the fireworks. After the show, we weren't even off the base yet and she crashed!
Yesterday was a down day for us.. we just kinda chilled.. it was def nice and relaxing..
Today.. I don't see myself doing a whole lot. I have gotten laundry done and put away.. Roey's crib sheets stripped and washed.. her high chair stripped and washed.. and her baby book updated.. that'll probably be the extent of what I'll do!
It's almost Ro's nap time, so I'll do a Roey update this afternoon :)
8 months ago my precious baby girl was born! I can't believe it! Time is going so fast.. she's getting so big and doing so much.. only 4 months til her first birthday.
Don't really have time to do an update now.. friends will be here in a little over and hour for our 4th of July festivities! Spending 4th of July with the men who fight for your freedom and with some of the strongest, most courageous women you'll ever meet. We're having a lil shindig here.. then all of us are heading to the base this evening for fireworks! Can't wait to just hang out with my girls and Roey can't wait for her friend Audrey to come over! (Derek's already selling tickets for a cage fight! hahahaha! Those 2 girls are just too cute together.)
I'll update tomorrow! Still have stuff to do before everyone gets here!
So Today was the end of my 3rd week.. I knew that I didn't do good on my diet.. I haven't been drinking much water, and I've been eating big supers.. so I knew that I gained this week.. and of course I did.. but only 0.9lbs.. guess it'll just give me more to work for next week!
We aren't big Mexican eaters in our house.. sure we like the occasional tacos or plain fajitas, but that is about the extent of it.. so making this meal was pretty risky, but we both loved it! I did change a few things from the original recipes to modify to our liking, and it was just perfect! So here's the recipes!!
1 lb skinless, boneless chicken breasts cut into strips
1 tbls canola oil
2 c mont. jack cheese
Preheat oven to 350 (175C for us in Europe!)
Grease cookie sheet
Fry chicken strips in oil until no longer pink
Place tortillas between 2 damp paper towel and microwave for 1 minute
Fill half of 1 tortilla with chicken and cheese
Fold tortilla over
Bake quesadillas in oven until cheese has melted
Cut into 4s
Serve with salsa and sour cream
Mexican Style Cornbread
1 c yellow cornmeal
1 c sifted all purpose flour
2 1/2 tbls sugar
4 teas baking powder
1/2 teas salt
1 large egg
1 c buttermilk
1/4 c vegetable oil
Handful of cheese (I used Shredded Mild Cheddar! PERFECT!)
2 tbls of honey
Preheat oven to 425
Grease an 8" pan
Combine cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt
Then add egg, milk, sourcream, oil, honey, and cheese
Mix until smooth
Pour into pan
Bake 20-25 minutes or until golden brown (mine cooked for about 25-26 minutes)
I finished the meal off with Spanish Rice.. just a regular store bought bag of spanish rice.. all 3 foods complimented each other greatly!!!
